Carlo Levi was born in Torino in 1902. He trained an as doctor, but later devoted himself to politics, literature and painting. He became well own as a writer after the war with the publication of Christ Stopped at Eboli, which revealed to Italian readers a long neglected part of their own country, Lucania, where he had been restricted in 1935-6 for his anti-Fascist activities. Carlo Levi died in 1975.
His other works include Words are Stone, The Watch, a picture of political intrigue in Rome immediately after the war, and travel books on Russia, Germany and Italy.
