Although James considered himself a writer of novels and drama, it was to the short story, or nouvelle, that he turned at times when his novel or dramatic writing came under pressure.
The short story offered a freedom which the nineteenth-century novel could not provide. This was the form in which he could respond most freely and most adequately to the world's vastness - allowing him to approach the Jamesian dream of encompassing "everything". John Lyon has made his selection from across James's writing career and includes well-loved tales such as 'Daisy Miller' and 'The Figure in the Carpet', along with some less widely-known tales.
